The traditional, stylish, low-profile skate helmet is what you want. This half-cap, bucket shaped skateboard helmet protects the front, back top and sides of your head.

• Skateboard helmets usually have a bucket shape with a hard exterior made from ABS plastic, fiberglass composite carbon fiber or Kevlar.
• Skateboard helmets have a soft foam interior,a cushony protective liner which slows the force of an impact.
• The better skateboard helmets are the ones that are constructed with an exterior hard shell and interior soft foam protective liner, these are built to resist multiple impacts.
• Some skateboard helmets are NOT ASTM F1492 certified. This does not mean they are a bad helmet, it means the manufacturer didn't seek to certify. A safety standards certification does add cost to the price of the skateboard helmet.
• It is important to inspect the exterior and interior for damage after a fall. Damage to the interior or exterior, cracks or splits - anything besides a scrape or abrasion, is a sign that the helmet needs to be replaced.

If you seek a skateboard helmet that can also function as a BMX helmet or mountain bike helmet you need one that is CPSC safety certified for bicycle use.

• Bike/Skate helmets have the same low-profile bucket shape and are constructed of a light and stiff styro-foam material called EPS (expanded polystyrene). This protective liner material condenses, breaks, cracks or fractures upon sustaining one moderate to heavy impact.
• CPSC certified skate style helmets have an EPS protective liner which meets safety standards for both skateboard and bicycle use. More impact absorption and distribution qualities are found in helmets with EPS liners that are approved for both bike and skate since bicycle crashes tend to occur at much faster speeds.
• These are the best helmets for the most aggressive skater. The low-profile skate style helmet you want with the top-rated quality hardshell exterior construction, EPS foam protective liner and CPSC safety certification for both bike and skate.
• Bike/skate helmets are meant to have only one hard impact. It is important to always inspect your skateboard helmet for cracks, breaks or fractures on the exterior and interior after a fall. If there is any damage other then a surface abrasion or scrape the manufacturer recommends you replace the helmet.

Proper Fit of a Skateboard Helmet

For a skateboard helmet to have any effect at all in protecting you from a serious head injury they must fit properly. A proper fit for a skateboard helmet is ensured by first selecting the right size of helmet, too loose and, no matter how tight the chin strap on your skateboard helmet is, it will still leave room for injury if it's not centered properly on your head. Too small of a skateboard helmet won't give you the proper amount of coverage.

Measuring the size of your head

How a Skateboard is Supposed to Fit

How a skateboard helmet rests on your head is imperative to a skateboard helmets performance. Proper skateboard helmet fit means proper head coverage, meaning that the front of the skateboard helmet should sit down onto your forehead just above the eyebrows. There should be room to fit a pair of sunglasses, about a half inch between the sides of the helmet and your head.

Skateboard helmets are sold with varying outer shell sizes and accommodate riders with removable and interchangeable padding and liners. Skateboard helmets come with a sizing guide that explains the relationship to the actual head size, usually in centimeters and the corresponding helmets size (small, medium, large, extra large, etc.

How Does the Skateboard Helmet Feel to You?

Different skateboard helmet manufacturers make their helmets differently, what's important, in the long run, is how the skateboard helmet feels to you. It's your head, you tell me what you like or dislike and our knowledgeable reps will accommodate you accordingly. If you purchase a helmet that is the right size and there is still a little too much room, that is less of a problem since you can add extra padding or a liner. If the helmet feels too tight in any area it's too small and you need to get a larger size ofskateboard helmet or a different brand of skateboard helmet in the same size to get a better fit.
